An Gasice Adventure Journey

As part of the An Gaisce Bronze Award Aideen and Steve brought a group of trainees on an adventure journey on Monday 12th July.  They climbed Truskmore (15.430 km / 9.64 miles), cycled (7.780 / 4.86 miles) and stayed in Benwisken Youth Hostel. The trainees had to plan, train for and complete this outdoor Adventure Journey as part of a team.  This was a unique, enjoyable and memorable experience, as well as an opportunity to experience self-sufficiency.  It was a beautiful day too! Thanks to Barry and William from North West Adventure for their guidance.

Lads Active - Cycling Week 1

Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership have linked with Cycling Ireland in the build up to the Sport Ireland Yeats Tour of Sligo on 30th April 2017 to offer Sligo CTC an opportunity to deliver a Cycling Initiative for teenagers.  This initiative aims to encourage teenagers to cycle more often and to take on the challenge of completing the 60km distance in the Yeats Tour of Sligo.

Yesterday William Britton and Aideen brought a group of 10 trainees from Lads Active for a 1 hour cycle down the Back Avenue, Doorly Park and around the track.  He provided bikes and helmets for the trainees.  This was an enjoyable and wet experience!!  A few puddles along the way.......  Well done to all the lads that took part and we look forward to next week's challenge!

Men's Health Week - Pedal to Paddle

As part of Bike Week and in conjuction with Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership, the Lads Active group and some tutors took part in Pedal to Paddle.  This involved a leisurely cycle and a stand-up paddle board taster session in the beautiful surroundings of our local area. This is the first time that many of us got the opportunity to sample a SUP session and both activities were thoroughly enjoyed by all that took part.

We would like to thank Theresa from Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership for providing us with the opportunity to take part in this great event.  We would also like to express gratitude to the cycle and SUP tutors Warner, William and Vincent for all their help and support.

Thanks to Warner and William for all their encouragement over the last few weeks. It was a very enjoyable experience.

Girls Only Triathlon Training

A group of girls from the centre are taking part in the Girls Only Triathlon on May 12th 2016 in Sligo. This triathlon involves a 100m swim, 6km cycle and a 2km run.  The girls started their training for it today using bikes and learning some cycling techniques.  Well done to all who are partaking in this fantastic challenge!

Sligo CTC Cycling Initiative - Week 3

It was a beautiful sunny day and we had a great turnout for the cycling initiative last Wednesday. We all gathered at the centre and cycled along the Garavogue River, crossed over the bridge at the Riverside Hotel, out by the hospital towards Ballinode, out the Dromahair Rd and then to Hazelwood. Hazelwood is located at Half Moon Bay along the shores of Lough Gill. The walks here are among the most beautiful with views from the trail toward Church Island, Cottage Island and Goat Island and the full expanse of Lough Gill. The fitness of the group is improving and next week is the last week of the cycling initiative.
